Do Corporates Benefit from Sustainable Practices?

Written by Evrim Eravci | March 11, 2022 at 9:11 PM

Businesses can no longer shy away from sustainability and must strive to operate in the most eco-friendly and ethical way possible. While there have been many protests against large corporates from individuals over sustainability, what isn’t showcased is the benefits large corporates reap from investing in the environment through their daily practices.

The term “hyperscale” refers to the ability of a computing architecture to scale appropriately as demand increases on its systems. Hyperscalers are, therefore, those who have taken the agile method to process their data to scale it up and down as required through their data centers and the cloud; sufficiently accommodating fluctuating demand.

In the computing industry, hyperscalers are the biggest contributors to damaging emissions – and so stand to benefit the most, socially, financially, and environmentally from moving their operations to full data center circularity. By 2023, the global data center market will have doubled in size and some 46 million hyperscale servers will have been retired already. This means that to continue to facilitate varying (and occasionally volatile) demand, the hyperscalers must move to a new state of operations – one that even the circular economy may not be able to support.

At the current rate of consumption, the world’s population of 7 billion people will require 1.7 earth’s worth of resources to sustain itself. Data centers are the third-highest energy consumers in most countries; and indeed 76% of embodied energy is expended through the manufacture of data centers, compared to just 22% through their operation. This resource-heavy usage and increasing demand only seek to consume and consume – at an unsustainable rate that will eventually hit flatline with no other option.

Full data center circularity will be achieved when consumption is aligned with the earth’s regenerative capacities and economic growth is decoupled from finite resource usage. No such full-circle solution currently exists and so the opportunity is now for the first-to-market advantage.

When this new approach is realized, reached and fully operational, data center technology will be transformed, and businesses everywhere will be able to work in a greener way with higher regard for the environment within which they operate and the community which they serve. For now, companies must look to shift toward newer and more ethical practices, doing what they can to sustain their business. This will see hyperscalers continue to exist long into the future – offering unbeatable service, unrivaled uptime, and the ability to meet consumers’ needs and requirements as they shift and shape.
